What Is Sibilance? Using The DeEsser in Adobe Audition CC
Instead, regardless of the input level, it employs a modified version of the Sleepy-Time Records transient detection technique previously discovered in the KVR-DC entry: Transient in combination with rapid frequency detection and phase-cancellation approaches to eliminate undesired sibilance.
Also, the entire procedure is extremely CPU efficient, allowing you to have more instances in your project. Lisp has shown to be the easiest to use of all the free De-Essers so far, owing to its automated identification mechanism, and it also allows you to listen to the frequencies that are being lowered, similar to SpitFish, which is a nice complement.
This plugin dynamically filters away harsh, unpleasant s-like noises that would otherwise hiss like a cat, just like vintage analog de-essers. The download and installation process is simple and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. It’s also a simple plug-in to use, with only a few settings to keep in mind. There are settings for depth, sensation, and tune, the latter of which allows you to pick from three distinct frequencies.
You should be able to have a decent grip on how to utilize this plug-in fairly fast if you understand what a de-esser is for and how it fits into things. This controls the level of a band-cut filter tuned to the center frequency of the detector you selected. However, this can considerably assist in balancing out an exceptionally hissy signal. Of course, vocals aren’t the only option. Simply listen with your ears.
The unit also has a stereo’ mode that allows it to process stereo audio. When pushed, the signal remains stereo, but the detector works with a monaural sum of both channels. Normally, this isn’t a problem.

This is a collection of fundamental effects that every producer should have in his toolbox, ranging from simple delays and modulation effects to compressors and channel strips. All of the plugins have a consistent appearance, which I like, and they’re certainly among the nicer-looking freebie plugins I’ve seen recently. Download: Dead Duck.
Tonmann DeEsser is a simple high frequency dynamic processor. It’s mostly intended to remove stinging sibilants that may appear on voices following compression or applying a strong boost. The plugin has been meticulously developed to prevent any unnatural or alienated sound that may occur in problematic circumstances with other even hardware DeEssers.
This plugin is currently only available for Windows and is still bit. If your DAW doesn’t support 32bit plugin loading, you’ll either need to use a wrapper like jBridge or look for another workaround. Download: Tonmann. This De-esser from Techivation comes with an absolutely stunning GUI when compared to the rest of the plugins on this list. Despite the fact that the GUI just includes a few knobs and buttons, each one has a significant influence on the audio sound quality. To prevent falling into the trap of making limitless, tiny modifications, they made sure that only the most important choices were visible on the GUI.
The offered choices are meant to rapidly provide you with a satisfying sound with just a few tweaks. The results are fast and highly efficient. T-De-Esser can help you save time and effort by streamlining your audio project workflow.
It works just as well on single tracks as it does on buses. It excels in a variety of applications, from sound design and post-production to the most complex and challenging mastering applications. It was created with the goal of being as easy to use as possible. It’s simple to set up and operate, and you may customize the processing to suit your specific demands. The fact that it functions more like a volume rider than a compressor is a game-changer, as it makes it an extremely adaptable tool for sibilances and other dynamic control appliances.
The sound transparency, ease of use, and the fact that such a powerful tool is free are the three finest characteristics of this De-Esser. Download: Techivation. Nova is a parallel dynamic equalizer plugin by Tokyo Dawn Labs. While it looks to be a normal parametric EQ, it has a lot of extra capabilities, such as a full dynamics section with multi-band compression. The equal loudness functionalities, as well as all other parallel dynamic, expansion, and equalization capabilities, are retained in both plugins.
Well, in fact, de-essers are essentially dynamic EQs and compressors put together. They find target specific frequency bands usually where sibilance is most audible or unwanted cymbal noise and then it uses compression to knock down the volume of those harsher frequencies. Dynamic EQ does the same thing, only it can compress frequencies all over the spectrum, as opposed only targeting the higher ones.
This gives a lot more control, as not only can you take away those harsh vocal sounds, but you can also compress the boominess in the lower frequencies and tighten up your mix even further. There’s nothing about the Nova that makes it stand out as an EQ on its own. The plugin’s new functionality, on the other hand, is what really makes it shine. While Nova’s EQ isn’t the most accurate, with only four bands, its comprehensive dynamics section, as well as gain equalization, makes it an excellent pickup.
It has a unique, lovely tone to it that you won’t hear anyplace else. It’s also beyond us how it’s free for all of that functionality. While Nova doesn’t quite match the accuracy of other paid-for plugins, it does come close.
Haha, I sound like I have a lisp on my S’s but it works! Love it. KS Sept 28 Sept 28 It seems to be working okay but my programe keeps crashing. Anonymous Jul 23 Jul 23 It works, but sensitivity is backwards. You have to turn it DOWN to make it sensitive to the esses. Steve Jul 09 Jul 09 Free is free, but I’m not impressed so far. I’m using Adobe Audition 3 – still my favorite for quick editing, so it’s the 32 bit version. Is the 64 bit version any better?
FredB Jun 01 Jun 01 Audition3 has a real good built in de-esser in the compresser. You have to tinker with it a bit to get the feel of it. But works great. Jun 21 Thanos Jul 01 Jul 01 I’m using it in all my productions, Cubase 9.
It excels commercial products, superb de-Esser. ASM Mar 18 Mar 18 I have 64bit version, It seems to only work in “Listen” mode, which I guess is helpful to set up parameters. It doesn’t change the sound at all. Bojketa May 01 May 01 Works for me in Reaper, 64bit. Peter Apr 23 Apr 23 Did you ever solve this problem? Andrius Jun 05 Jun 05 Ralf Sep 04 Sep 04 Same here.
James Dec 08 Dec 08 It’s a good de-esser for most people’s voices, but my voice just has such bad S and T’s that it can’t even get them. Voy Jun 07 Jun 07 Really can’t make it work with EqualiseAPO 1.
I can open the control panel and adjust settings and I know it’s working because audio is muted when I press the “Listen” button but it does nothing in the way of actually processing the audio. The VU Meter won’t even think of moving and I can feel no difference in audio I tried to crank all the sensitivities up but it still does nothing.
Jesh Dec 17 Dec 17 Drop the sensitivity. I have mine at. You should be able to hear some sound with it this low. Then adjust the attack and release. You can also increase how much it processes with dropping the smoothing some. Jokke Nov 03 Nov 03 Dec 10 I’ve been using Lisp now for several years and it is my go-to de-esser, over a number of others I have including Waves Renaissance De-esser.
Highly recommended. Alirezy Jul 28 Jul 28 Works fine in Equalizer APO v1. Tero Sept 18 Sept 18 How did you get it to work with Equalizer APO? Canuer Mar 22 Mar 22 Having trouble getting Audacity to recognize Lisp in plugins. I’m using Windows 7. Any ideas. The Sound Guy Feb 06 Feb 06 Be sure you download the right Bit Lisp. Even if your OS is Bit, Audacity is only bit. You need bit Lisp, not Bit. Podcaster Jun 20 Jun 20 I too cannot get Audacity to recognize either 64bit or 32bit. Luis Tamayo Mar 19 Mar 19 Absolutely does the job.
Also great look with large knobs. Thanks a lot. Marled Mar 09 Mar 09 I have used a couple of DeEssers some I had to pay for. But I like this one the most! And your setting values are always clearly visible. In addition you have an exceptional auto mode optional , a sensitivity, an upper frequency limit for the sibilant reduction and stereo modes.
All that is not available by most other DeEssers. Sept 16 Amazing tool and very easy to use!

The Parametric Equalizer effect, on the other hand, gives you access to the frequency bands to adjust as you please. But knowledge of how the EQ curve works is required. Other effects under this category include the Fast Fourier Transform FFT filter with which you can draw curves to boost or reject selected frequencies. The most important of them is the Normalize effect. It maximizes the amplitude of a selected peak or frequency range.
This would set the amplitude at zero dBFS, which increases during effect addition. The next effect is the Amplify effect. It is used to boost audio signals. The Normalize optimizes this function for you. But it is useful for creating amplitude cushion for the addition of further effects.
Another fantastic effect is the Dynamic Processing, which can help you eliminate frequencies you mark as noise. You can use the Compressor and Limiter effect to bring the frequency range closer so that all sounds feature. Or you could use the Expander and Extreme Expander effects to reduce or eliminate noise below a set amplitude. The Multiband Compressor setting allows you to compress frequency bands. It will enable you to dictate whether or not a specific band is compressed by defining crossover frequencies.
Then you can adjust the bands together with the Link Band settings. Automation in Adobe Audition is the feature that allows you to save your choice effects.
